Interior Ballistics

An intimate understanding of interior ballistics is necessary for the successful development of an ammunition concept or a new weapon system.  At Veritay, we offer a wealth of experience in interior ballistics computer simulation and experimental diagnostics.

Interior ballistics modeling algorithms include:

  • IBHVG2  (Lumped parameter)
  • XNOVA KTC  (1-D)
  • BRL-CB  (Closed bomb burn rate reduction)
  • Blake  (Thermochemical property computation)
  • NASA-Lewis code (CET86)
  • Veritay-developed simulation & analysis software
    • Telescoped ammunition simulation (ANDREA)
    • Gun barrel heat transfer analysis (XBR-2D)

We use a variety of experimental test fixtures to complement our computer simulations and provide data to refine accuracy and aid in the development process.  Test fixtures are designed and instrumented specifically to meet the customer’s program needs.  Typical instrumentation includes:

  • Piezoelectric pressure transducers
  • Thermocouples
  • Muzzle velocity
  • High-speed flash photography

For ignition system development or troubleshooting, it is beneficial to visually record the initial stages of propellant bed ignition and flame-spread propagation through the propellant bed. Veritay routinely designs and fabricates ignition diagnostic fixtures with an observation window that allows flame-spread propagation to be captured on high-speed motion capture film. These fixtures are typically for medium and large caliber systems.  Ignition diagnostic fixtures use the following instrumentation:

  • 16mm Hycam high-speed motion capture camera
  • Accelerometer, pressure transducer,  thermal instrumentation
  • In-bore or in-chamber projectile position, velocity, acceleration
